Lukaku explained he asked Zlatan Ibrahimovic for permission to wear the shirt which he wore last season.
He said: "Strikers play with No.9. It's a nice number, and I asked the permission of Zlatan Ibrahimovic. I want to thank him, as well, for allowing me to wear that number.”
Lukaku had also previously spoken about the No.10 shirt, which is vacant following the departure of Wayne Rooney, but settled on No.9, the number he also wears when representing Belgium.
Swedish defender Lindelof will wear the No.2 shirt previously worn by Reds legend Gary Neville.
The shirt has been vacant since Rafael left in 2015.
