Eric Dier open to Manchester United move, but Tottenham will not sell star.

Dier, 23, made 36 Premier League appearances for Spurs last season, but lost his favoured defensive midfield role to Victor Wanyama as he made a number of starts in defence for Mauricio Pochettino.

Jose Mourinho is on the lookout for a new defensive midfielder despite handing the United captaincy to Michael Carrick this week, with the Red Devils rivalling Chelsea for Monaco's Tiemoue Bakayoko after beating the champions to Everton's Romelu Lukaku.

Dier is understood to be interested on a move to United - the team he supported as a boy - where he would be deployed in his favoured role, and would expect to earn significantly more money given Spurs' controlled wage structure.

Having finished second to Chelsea in the league last season, Spurs will spend a year at Wembley before moving back to their new 61,000-seater stadium on the site of their former White Hart Lane home - a heavy financial undertaking.

Dier is a key squad player for Pochettino having proven himself capable in three different positions for the north London club, while Daniel Levy would be reluctant to sell to title rivals unless United come in with an offer well over the current estimates of £60million
