UFC president unloads on ‘f***ing nuts’ boxing legend over megafight
DANA White sounds like he is ready to go a few rounds with Oscar De La Hoya. Maybe they can fight on the undercard of the potential Floyd Mayweather-Conor McGregor blockbuster.
The chatty UFC president went off on the boxing legend and promoter on Wednesday, ripping him for his disparaging comments about the proposed fight and accusing De La Hoya of having ulterior motives.
“It’s f***ing insane,” White said. “I think he’s f***ing nuts.”
In a Facebook post from May 25, De La Hoya called the proposed fight between Mayweather and McGregor a “circus” from which boxing “might not ever recover”. De La Hoya predicted the undefeated Mayweather, who is now retired but has agreed to return to the ring for the fight, would dismantle McGregor, a UFC champion in two different weight classes. He urged boxing fans not to order the fight.
White pointed out that the McGregor-Mayweather fight could overshadow the championship matchup between Canelo Alvarez — the two-weight world champion whom De La Hoya promotes — and unified middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin, which is scheduled for September 16 — around the same time the McGregor-Mayweather fight could happen.
Earlier, White posted an Instagram video, taken four months ago, of De La Hoya talking up the possibility of Alvarez taking on McGregor.
“One hundred per cent he’s being an absolute hater on the thing. An absolute hater,” White said. “It’s just so transparent and so weird. (Promoter) Bob Arum is a scumbag. If he had the last fighter on earth and I had the last fighter on earth, I wouldn’t do a deal with that guy. He’s a piece of s***. But I always liked Oscar, and Oscar and I have always had a good rapport. It’s so out of left field and weird.”
