Chelsea FC forward Diego Costa is back among the goals after going four
games without scoring. The Spanish international scored off an Eden Hazard pass to cap off a 2-0 victory over
Hull City at Stamford
Bridge.
The
Blues needed a big response after losing to Newcastle last weekend, and
they did not have to wait too long. Hazard gave them an early lead,
heading in an
Oscar cross on seven minutes. Chelsea controlled the
game, as Hull offered little threat going forward, but it was evident that they were not at their best.
Some fans were already beginning to
worry about
Costa, his mini-drought was certainly a cause for frustration. After racking them up at an incredible
rate when the season just began, it seemed like he suddenly came to a halt, but truth is he didn’t. Scoring 11
Premier League
goals in 12 appearances was already fantastic, but he’s now at 12 in 13.
He
hasn’t gotten off the mark in the Champions League for Chelsea, but
that didn’t prevent them from being top scorers of the group stage. The
Blues have scored 17 in the competition so far, also winning their group
with a
game to spare.
Costa has nothing to prove, his time at Atletico Madrid tells it all. Scoring 20 from the wing in the same team as a rabid Radamel Falcao does him enough justice, but the 35 after Falcao’s departure proves his class. Out of all the great strikers to have graced the Vicente Calderon, Costa is the only one to help the Rojiblancos overthrow Real Madrid and Barcelona en route to the La Liga title.
Fernando Torres, Sergio Aguero, Diego Forlan — and of course Falcao, were all phenomenal strikers for Atletico, but none of them can boast winning a league title in Spain. Costa is the real deal, and although he does have a downside — as his knack for picking up yellows is almost on par with his goal-scoring — the positives more than outweigh the negatives.
At this stage in the season, he is only eight shy of 20 — which is respectable for any striker. He is expected to surpass that mark of course, but if he doesn’t, his first season in England would have still been a good one.
Club legend Didier Drogba didn’t get off to such an insane start, he didn’t get past the 16-goal mark until his third season with Chelsea. By those standards — and many others — Blues’ fans have nothing to worry about.
