Liverpool ‘end interest in Virgil van Dijk’ as club statement says sorry to Southampton over tapping-up claims

Virgil van Dijk was on the verge of joining Liverpool from Southampton until the Saints threatened to complain

LIVERPOOL have “ended their interest in Virgil van Dijk” as a club statement has apologised to Southampton over tapping-up claims.

The Saints were unimpressed by the Reds’ approach for their Dutch star centre-back and were going to report the club to the Premier League.

And it is understood Southampton are furious Liverpool planned to smash their transfer record and win the race for their star player ahead of rivals Chelsea and Manchester City.

The Saints have made it clear to the Premier League they have received no official approach from boss Jurgen Klopp.

“We apologise to the owner, board of directors and fans of Southampton for any misunderstanding regarding Virgil van Dijk.
“We respect Southampton’s position and can confirm we have ended any interest in the player.”

Southampton were unwilling to sell the £60million-rated defender to their Prem rivals, especially for a small fee.
